Here are some suggested safety tips to follow to keep you safe:

• When a thunderstorm threatens, get inside a home or large building.
• Avoid using the telephone, except for emergencies.
• Stay away from doors, windows, fireplaces, stoves, metal pipes, sinks, and electrical appliances.
• Do not use hairdryers or other small electrical appliances during the storm.
• Do not stand underneath an isolated tree or utility pole in an open area.
• Get out of or away from open water. Leave a small boat and take cover on land.
• Get off of and away from motorcycles, scooters, bicycles, etc.
• Stay away from wire fences, clotheslines, rails, and other metallic paths which could carry lightning to you from some distance away.
• Stay out of bathtubs and showers.
• Avoid cars that are convertible, fiberglass, or glass top cars.
• If you are caught outdoors and you are afraid you have been struck by lightning, here's what to do.  If you feel your skin tingle or your hair stand on end- crouch low to the ground on the balls of your feet. Put your hands on your knees and lower your head. Do not lie flat on the ground.
